It’s often difficult to know the difference between the mechanical watch and quartz watch by merely looking at them. For some, that’s the easiest way. For others, there’s almost no difference – both movements (caliber) tell time. Simple! But it’s not so simple.

The Mechanical Watch

The mechanical watch has a mechanical movement that involves the maintenance of power by a manual winding or automatic movement. All mechanical watches have a spring and balance wheel. The only way the wheel can work is if the watch wearer winds the spring regularly. Back in the late eighteenth century, a crown was used for this winding. Breguet was one of the manufacturers that came up at this time, and he produced different designs of the mechanical watch. With time, another design came up which involved the movement of the wrist influencing the spinning of a rotor which caused the spring to move. Many modern watches still use this design. The automatic watch, however, requires no regular winding and is more durable.

The Quartz Watch

The quartz watch came into existence in 1969, thanks to Japanese Seiko. It makes use of a quartz crystal which vibrates when exposed to electric current from a battery. The quartz crystal becomes the oscillator that powers the quartz watch unlike the balance wheel and spring in the mechanical watch.

The quartz watch has a more connected architecture when compared with the mechanical watch. Quartz watches don’t require so much craftsmanship during production, and they cost less than mechanical watches. 6. Mechanical watches require winding to function while quartz watches depend on battery.

7. The production time and effort in mechanical watches makes it more expensive than the quartz watch.

8. The quartz watch is long-lasting compared to the mechanical watch which requires winding and frequent repair.
